The Job

The Pioneer Collective is a collection of workspaces dedicated to the synergy that happens when people—even as individuals— work alongside each other. We worked with Pioneer Collective leadership to craft messaging architecture, photography, and a visual identity that celebrates their unique work environments.

The Challenge

How do we create an identity that bucks the trend of tech-focused startup incubators?

How do we work?

At the time, Pioneer Collective only had one location, an iconic historic building in Seattle’s Pioneer Square. However, we didn’t want to paint them into a corner by just focusing on the building. Work is, after all, more than just where you work.

We elected instead to build the identity using a simple wordmark and a series of illustrations by Old City Mailroom that help ground the identity with a organic and welcoming feel. By celebrating the items that accompany us as we work, we were able to create an identity that helped make tenants feel at home. And when the Pioneer Collective opened their second and third locations, the identity was able to expand with them.

Unlike many tech-forward, self-focused workspaces, The Pioneer Collective values organic materials, natural lighting, and a collective identity.

Implementation

We collaborated with an illustrator to create an inviting and approachable identity for The Pioneer Collective, designed to welcome those interested in working remotely—together.

Pioneer Collective illustrations

We commissioned Old City Mailroom to create a series of simple line illustrations to communicate the objects that surround and compliment everyday work.

Pioneer Collective stationary

Stationary is becoming a lost art for many businesses, but The Pioneer Collective found it to be a valuable way to make correspondence feel more personal.
